We add hundreds of new servers to our platform almost every month, but even that doesn't seem to help us to keep up with the server load. Which adds up very quickly and can sometimes make the platform slow for everyone. Since Ahrefs operates with big data, every call to our database (even from a free user) has its "cost". We have hundreds of thousands of registered free users from all around the world, which means they put a decent pressure on our platform pretty much 24/7. Which means we have to rigorously prioritise our development roadmap. We'd rather prefer to stay small and lean. There are under 40 people working at Ahrefs' and we don't want to grow into a big corporate monster.
Which takes quite a bit of time from our small team. So for everything new we add to Ahrefs, we have to develop free access (and all sorts of things associated with it). When you have free users in your platform, you have to always keep them in mind when releasing new tools/features. This was a challenging decision for us, but there are three main reasons why we think it is the right thing to do: The goal of this move is to improve the speed of development and serve our paying customers better.
